Comparing 2017 Lincoln MKC to 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC300

Replacing the boxy GLK in the Mercedes-Benz vehicle lineup, the 2016 GLC is curvier, longer and roomier than its predecessor. It's available in RWD or AWD, powered by a 241-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0L four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed transmission. Prices start at $39,875 for RWD versions and $41,875 for AWD models.(1) See how Lincoln MKC compares.

Competitive Perception

Mercedes-Benz promotes GLC300 as an SUV for the driving enthusiast.

  • 2.0L turbo I-4:
    • 241 horsepower
    • 273 lb.-ft. of torque
  • Agility Control® standard
  • Air Body Control® available

Lincoln Reality

The new twin-scroll 2.0L GTDI in Lincoln MKC is comparable to the horsepower and torque of the GLC300 engine. Lincoln MKC also gives clients the option of a more powerful engine: a 2.3L GTDI delivering 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque.(2)

Exceptional driving ability is further provided by the standard Torque Vectoring Control and Lincoln Drive Control, which includes continuously controlled damping (CCD), electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) and active noise control.

Competitive Perception

The GLC300 offers a flexible interior with more leg room and more cargo room.

Lincoln Reality

Any statement like that should always require one to ask, "more than what?" Certainly not more than Lincoln MKC, which offers more head room (front and rear), more front leg room and more cargo capacity with the rear seat in place.

GLC300 also weighs more than Lincoln MKC, making it more ponderous to maneuver.

Competitive Perception

The Mercedes-Benz name has a great deal of cache and the uninitiated believe these vehicles deliver great value for the money.

More informed buyers know that one way to keep an advertised price low is by skimping on standard equipment. For example, heated front seats are individual options on GLC300 or packaged with the $1,850 Premium Package. If clients want those seats to be ventilated, their only option is the $2,500 Interior Package. Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Assist require the $2,800 Driver Assistance Package.

By comparison, heated and cooled (not merely ventilated) front seats are standard on Lincoln MKC Reserve. Plus, the very well-equipped Lincoln MKC Technology Package is available for $2,295.

(3) Remember that even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It's always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions.
